Elite Korean Prep Schools – Good or Bad? Part 2

Hanhakmoon Findingkorea Findingkorea16 Images Daewon Sleeping

Nearly two months ago, I wrote a blogpost about Korean college prep schools, and a particular type, called Korean Foreign Language High Schools, such as Daewon and Minjok Leadership. and it came mainly from my personal experiences of living in Korea and from this New York Times article.

That article mainly praised the Korean Foreign Language High Schools (KFLHS) for taking the students to new heights by taking them to prominent schools, mainly in the Ivy League.

However, a few days ago, I read a blogpost by a former teacher of Daewon which unequivocally criticized the schools heavily. Here’s a few(actually, many) excerpts:

Does Blood Type Dictate A Person’s Character?

BLOOD.

http://horsesthink.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/blood_oil1.jpg

In Western society, it’s the stuff in our body. It’s also stuff that comes out in a lot of movies, especially ones with attractive vampires in it.

Recently, I was reading an article on the Korea Times: Can Blood Type Decide Character? Fortunately, the article was right, calling it “groundless,” but it seems that in Korea, many people believe that blood type DOES determine character, which I think is silly.

Having taken AP Biology (with a 5, too!), I shalt now explain to you the phenomenon of the ABO Blood System for people who don’t know, and the origins of this… myth, should I say?

Sleeping Beauty

Whether you’re a cat, human, dog, giraffe, fox, bird, or whatever, you need sleep.

I’M NOT JOKING!

EVERY LIVING BEING on this planet needs to sleep. It’s physiological. We can’t really live without it.

Today, I’m here to talk about how most people aren’t getting enough sleep, mainly teenagers in Korea.

According to the American Sleep Disorders Association and other scientific communities, an average teenager needs about 9.5 hours of sleep per night. A teenager’s body is growing, and key hormones for growth and sexual maturation are created in a teenager’s body while he/she is sleeping.

However, the average amount of sleep that a teenager is getting these days is 7.4 hours per day, which is 2 hours less, or 22% less than an average teenager should get.

Kids in the school I attend, Korea International School, are getting even less sleep than that. I remember a survey released by a group of students in our school, where the majority of the students had about 4-5 hours of sleep per day, and >95% of all high school students were “definetely tired.”

How To Use Bittorrent

(Warning: this is still kind of illegal, and I won’t take responsibility if you’re legally caught, even though the possibility of that is 1,000,000,000,000,000:1)
Although Bittorrent on paper seems like the hardest P2P software out there today, it’s simpler than it seems, is usually faster than other convential P2P software, and has some better functions (choose what you download).

Enjoy.

Revolutionize the Classic

There’s a really coolwebsite called iminlikewithyou.com and it has a variety of games for free. The first, most original, and most popular game is called Blockles, which is a newer version of Tetris.

The two things that make this game so fun are the fact that you can play your friends and socialize. If you’ve ever had the “I’m better at Tetris than you” debate with your friend, you can settle it right now by playing each other instead of comparing who has the higher level/score.

Working in a business = Going to work in the morning + working for a few hours + lunch/coffee breaks –> go Home…

Right?

Well, not in Korea it is.

This comic strip above made me laugh when I read it.

It made me laugh because it was funny.

But it also made me laugh because the reason I laughed was because of the harsh fact: the economy is in a recession.

BLOGGING? pt. 1

I had my first experiences of blogging at the tender age of 12, when I created my very own Xanga site. Although in those times, it was more of a social networking website like Facebook and Myspace (and still is), it was my very first experience of blogging.
